Studio Notes

studio update

okay, here it goes......we’ve been recording songs for our full length album off and on for the last 2 months. we’re currently right in the middle of an eight hour a day, 4 day studio binge. we’ve finished almost all of the instruments (guitars, bass, drums, piano) on 8 songs. no vocals have been laid down yet, but we might be starting those as early as tomorrow. we still have 4 entire songs to lay down, although 2 of those still need to be arranged further. all the lyrics are completed, which took an extremely long time to write because this album is a story, a “concept record” i suppose. we’re hoping to put a song or two up within the coming weeks. they most likely won’t be the final mastered versions but hopefully close to.

mike is about to bass it up right now so i have to wrap this up in case i have to yell at him for fucking anything up.

Recording in the Studio

More studio work today. Some editing, some recording.

We’ve been putting this album together in pieces for the past while. 5 songs here, 3 songs there, but it’s slowly coming together (And sounding great!). In the end it looks like we’ll have 12 tracks on the album.

Ryan is putting some keyboard down on a song called “We’re all fine, but did anyone check the doctor”, Bond is doing whatever Bond does on the mixing board, Tristan is in the other room presumably writing a guitar part (although he’s on the floor, so I can’t confirm), and I’m on the couch killing time until I can be of use.

I’m not going to even guess at when it’ll be coming out, because I’ll definitely be wrong, but hopefully we’ll have a new song or two to put up soon.

Mar 07 Sunday, 2010

I know it’s been awhile so here it goes.

Since the release of our first ep the plan all along was to do a full length album. About 6 months ago we started doing demos for 5 new songs that had taken an extremely long time to write (around a year). As opposed to our first ep of which the major chunks of the songs were written by me (ryan) these songs were a complete group effort. In doing so we really had to learn to work as a unit which took quite awhile because: (a) we have some similar but mostly different tastes in music. and (b) we all have our own ideas of what works and what dosen’t.

After re-writing and re-arranging these songs countless times, I think we were all tired and frustrated that this was it, this was how far we’d come. We decided instead of forcing ourselves to write more songs(which never turn out as well as when they just naturally come out) we’d record them and see what they sounded like.

After hearing them back for the first time, we were all impressed at the sound and the structure, so we decided to re-record them properly and focus on that for the time being. Then the floodgates opened. As soon as we stopped trying to write, the writing just happened. One part turned into a song, that song inspired another and so on.

We sit right now on 12 songs that are the best songs I’ve been a part of since i started playing guitar 13 years ago. We’ve still got a ways to go in the recording process and are taking our time with it to get it exactly how we want it to sound.

It’s going to be an exciting next few months for us as we lock ourselves away in the studio, however we will post updates as often as we can and we will see you soon.

New Website!

Welcome to the new Late ’94s website. I'll be making some changes and additions over the next while, but wanted something up other than our facebook and myspace pages. We'll officially announce the launch when the we've all had a chance to look it over and make our final decisions.

More bass tracking last night. Things are sounding great!

Last night we started the bass tracking for the new album. Bond and I recorded and experimented with my parts for about 5 hours, generating some really great stuff. We’ll be doing more recording later in the week. I’ll have to bring my own drinks to avoid having to mix with Bond’s 160 proof rum.

This week we tracked the drum beds for five new songs. Our buddy Pete Gilroy came and engineered the session for us and we laid down some great stuff... I drummed until 5am... I think tristan was asleep for the last few takes, and I think short took some weird video of me drumming with no shirt on, undoubtedly talking gibberish. These five tunes are the groundwork for our second album, which will hopefully be poking its head out by the end of the year. Until then we’ll be writing and playing a few live shows around town... and maybe down a highway or two.
